Model Sheet Monday

"Tangled" 2010

These aren’t exactly model sheets, they’re character development sketches. In between concept and final design. A lot of these are notes to the character modelers and animators. They’re really fun to look at though. I also just really like Rapunzel, that’s the main reason I’m posting them.

Rapunzel designed by Glen Keane.

As you guys know, I’m fascinated by the process behind animation. From concept down to production, the whole thing is just plain interesting. A personal hobby of mine is collecting production artwork. I don’t have much because the prices tend to be outrageous (I’m looking at you, Disney cels.) But I’m slowly collecting what I can get a hold of.

Here are a few pieces I have from the first season of “Spongebob Squarepants”. I have some production drawings from “Sandy’s Rocket” and “Culture Shock” and a master background from “Neptune’s Spatula.”

A couple of these were scrap drawings or were cut from the final shot, but they’re still great fun to look at. One of them was also edited a bit before it was used in the final. The drawings that ended up on-screen I have posted with the correlating screen capture.

If any of you happen to own any sort of animation production art, show it off! I love to see what other people have in their own collections.
